He could "taste" what he smells

Does anyone know anyone who has this same symptom?: the 61-year old man could "taste" what he smells, like perfume and skin lotion. Yet he lost his sense of taste with food a few years ago. (He's also got facial numbness and tingling, and more, but I'm really curious about how many others know of someone who "tastes" what they smell, and how this condition was treated.)
